Terms of service
2 November 2026
These terms cover https://startinghandle.app, the copy of Starting Handle hosted by James Howling. These terms are not a company contract, and there is no company behind the site.
The software and the website
The software is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only. Source: https://github.com/howlingj/car-servicing-app. If you run a modified version as a network service, that licence requires you to make the corresponding source available to the people who use it.
These terms are for use of this hosted instance. If you install your own copy, you run that copy yourself: these hosted-service terms do not apply to it, and the AGPL still does.
Who can use it
You need a Google account to sign in. The service is not for children under 13. It is aimed at people keeping records for cars in the UK. MOT lookup only makes sense for a UK registration.
What you are getting
A place to keep car records for yourself, and to share a car with people you invite. It is a personal project. It can go offline, and it can be withdrawn. There is no charge and no service level.
It is not mechanical advice, not an MOT certificate, and not a substitute for a garage or for the official MOT record. Figures that come back from DVSA can be missing or wrong. Check anything that matters at the time you rely on it.
Your records
You keep ownership of the text and files you upload. You grant James Howling the permission he needs to store them and show them back to you and to people you have invited to that car, and to delete them when you ask.
Don't upload something you have no right to store. Don't use the site to break the law, to try to open someone else's garage, or to overload the service. A personal API token acts as you: don't share it, and delete it if you no longer use it.
Sharing
Inviting someone lets them see that car, including photos, receipts and costs. An editor can change those records. Handing over ownership is permanent from your side of the button: you stay on as an editor unless you leave. Invite links are tied to the email address you enter, and they expire.
Closing your account
You can download a copy from Settings, and you can delete the account there. The privacy policy says what that removes, including a car you share with other people. If you cannot sign in, email hello@startinghandle.app.
Liability
The hosted service is provided as is, without a warranty of accuracy, availability or fitness for a particular purpose. Nothing in these terms limits liability that English law does not allow to be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Otherwise, liability for using this free instance is limited to the extent the law allows.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales decide disputes about them.
